Immediate Crisis & Crisis-Adjacent Support

These resources are essential for anyone who needs to talk to someone right away or needs help navigating immediate distress:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US):

    • Purpose: Provides 24/7, free, and confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

    • How to Contact: Call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.

  • Crisis Text Line:

    • Purpose: Connects users with a trained crisis counselor.

    • How to Contact: Text HOME or MHA to 741741.

  • United Way 211 (US):

    • Purpose: A comprehensive referral service that can connect you to long-term mental health resources, counseling, and other essential community services (like housing or food assistance) in your area.

    • How to Contact: Call 211.

National and Global Advocacy & Resource Organizations

These organizations focus on education, advocacy, and connecting people with long-term support for managing mental health conditions, which contributes to "getting through life with ease."

  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) (US):

    • Mission: Dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness through advocacy, education, support, and public awareness.

    • Resources: Offers a national HelpLine, local support groups, and free educational programs to help individuals and families manage life with mental health conditions.

  • Mental Health America (MHA) (US):

    • Mission: The nation's leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to the promotion of mental health, well-being, and the prevention of mental conditions.

    • Resources: Known for its online mental health screening tools, resources on finding treatment, and "warm lines" (a place to call when you just need to talk, not in crisis).

  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (US Government Agency):

    • Purpose: Provides a free, confidential treatment locator for behavioral health services (substance abuse and mental health).

    • How to Contact: 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or use their online treatment locator.

  • HelpGuide.org:

    • Purpose: A trusted online resource that empowers you with evidence-based knowledge and skills to strengthen your mental health, well-being, and cope with difficult situations.

  • World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) (Global):

    • Mission: Works to promote mental health awareness, prevention of mental disorders, advocacy, and recovery-focused interventions worldwide.

Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. They can’t cause or predict a suicide attempt, but they’re important to be aware of.

  • Mental disorders, particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and certain personality disorders

  • Alcohol and other substance use disorders

  • Hopelessness

  • Impulsive and/or aggressive tendencies

  • History of trauma or abuse

  • Major physical illnesses

  • Previous suicide attempt(s)

  • Family history of suicide

  • Job or financial loss

  • Loss of relationship(s)

  • Easy access to lethal means

  • Local clusters of suicide

  • Lack of social support and sense of isolation

  • Stigma associated with asking for help

  • Lack of healthcare, especially mental health and substance abuse treatment

  • Cultural and religious beliefs, such as the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma

  • Exposure to others who have died by suicide (in real life or via the media and Internet)
